News of a vaccine is always welcome. It may be our only way out of this without years of having to manage the impact of the virus circulating in the population.

Here in the UK I believe we had some trials on a vaccine start back in May.

I'm not an anti vaxer at all by any shape or form but I'd be leary about any vaccine at this stage and wouldn't take it yet.

I know what you mean Dana. There is such a rush on worldwide to develop this vaccine that I would have concerns about one when it is released.

I just hope that no corners are cut in the making of this vaccine before it is approved for use.

    Way too soon for that.
The best case scenario for any vaccine, according to experts who have addressed development time, is a year and a half of research, development, and lab testing before it can even be considered for human testing.
Janssen could very well kill someone by testing this early. And when (not if) it goes wrong, it'll give anti-vaxxers even more ground to stand on, which will probably lead to more people not taking the actual vaccine next year or so when it finally does get developed.
This is irresponsible, and it is not going to end well.

I'd like to be optimistic but I have wondered if we're only at the beginning of a science fiction novel.

We really need a vaccine badly, or else we all end up dead.
It may be good for the planet though if we all kick the bucket.

Here in the UK, Oxford University are already into the Human Trials, and the Pharmaceutical Company Astrazeneca is ALREADY in production , so that if/when the vaccine is given the go ahead, they will already have 400 Million doses ready to go.

It’s still going to be a bit of a while before anyone has any kind of regular access to vaccines. All we can do is take preventative measures now.

The vaccine cannot come soon enough for me, I am sick being stuck inside all the time.
Now our suburb is being cut off, because of careless assholes.

Same kind of deal here. We'll probably be facing another lockdown too, also due to careless people (and honestly, careless oversight from government offices that relaxed prevention measures way too much).

The US is seeing new record highs of covid, which doesn't surprise me given the fact that about 95% of people don't wear masks, or keep their distance either one.

Same here - from my balcony the neighbourhood looks just like normal, people outside, walking around, holding hands ...

I help organize the social program for our condo complex - they want a July 1st Canada Day party ! (They're not getting one.)

The UK Government have just announced that from the 4th July in England Pubs and restaurants can re-open. I really don't think that the Prime Minister wanted to relax the restrictions so much in my opinion but he was being put under so much pressure. He could have shown really strong leadership and held his ground and did what is best but, instead, he's given way to the pressure. No doubt if (when) a second wave hits England, the same people who were putting him under pressure to lift restrictions so soon will be crucifying him for lifting them too soon.

Thankfully I'm in Scotland and we have our own Government to direct us through this. So far our First Minister has been much stronger at resisting the pressure to relax restrictions at a faster pace than they currently are. Hopefully this continues.

Having said that I also think there is a small proportion of the population for who restrcitions haven't even began yet. They seem to just be going about daily life and socialising as normal.

Interesting that the government wants to open the pups on the 4th of July (independence day celebration from England by the USA). Is there some significance that I'm not aware of?

I have heard the media make reference to the restrictions being eased on the 4th July but no significance for us in the UK. I think it's purely the PM buckling under the pressure and easing restrictions before they should be.

So. A little on drugs in general. I was on Acutane for acne back in the late 90s, early 2000s. It stopped it. And gave me Eczema. Now I am on a drug that is stopping that, but I am leery of the long terms of what that will cause. Acutane was taken off the market, later, because of something with "caused depression leading often to suicide".

Accutane as a brand name is discontinued, but generic formulations (Isotretinoin) are still widely available, and prescribed, including in the USA.
Accutane can have severe side effects, but it has not been shown to cause increased depression vs placebo in any study I'm aware of.
Severe acne has, however, been known to cause depression.

That was the listed reason I found. IBS as well.

2012 meta-study in the Journal of Clinical Phsychiatry found a higher rate of depression in Accutane users vs "other acne meds".

I too think he relaxed restrictions too soon, like the total lockdown with only a hours of exercise. That should of been extended once, if not twice at least. The pubs, etc opening was too soon but what was he thinking of a Saturday opening? A Monday or Tuesday would of been better. I'm still furloughed with no idea of when we'll be allowed back. No business for us until Late September at the earliest. I suppose Boris and the Government lifting restriction's is easing the coffers on their bank balance.

As much as I don't like Sturgeon, I think she has done really well at handling this virus. But although she can order different rules, monies still come from London/UK Government I believe. We have a holiday home near the Trossachs's, we've been unable to visit it because of different rules. My wife is Scottish btw.

Indeed, mainly my next door neighbours who have just totally disregarded everything from day one, apart from their jobs! VE Day was a joke in our street, everyone within close contact. I left after 30 minutes. Now the rules on wearing face coverings. I totally agree with it, it helps spread airbourne droplets from each other. Some people are moaning their not going to wear one. Fine, but they'll be the first people expecting treatment on the NHS when they have Covid-19. They'll also be the sort of person who in the winter months, use's a scarf to cover their mouths/nose's as the air is to cold to inhale! Face mask's/covering should of been made mandatory from the start, giving everyone say a week to 10 days to either purchase some or make them!

Stay safe everyone. Lets defeat this virus.
