Six former classmates attending a school reunion brought an average of ten old photos each.
Sally brought twice as many photos as Philippa, who brought four times as many as Katie. Katie's photos plus Philippa's photos equalled the number of photos that Marie brought, which was half as many as Helen.
If Sarah brought four photos, how many did Sally bring?

i cant figure it out.. im jus not able to form a fucking equation.. post the answer jaime.... i just HAVE to know this!!!

To follow on from my last post, mortairakley, I didn't try to form an equation. I just worked out that, as there were 6 former pupils and they brought an average of 10 photos each, there was a total of 60.
If Sarah brought 4 photos, the other 5 pupils must have brought 56 between them, and I worked it out from that.
I will give the answer tomorrow, unless someone has come up with it in the meantime!

I'm all out of duct tape and rubber bands. I can't begin to work on this until I can go to the hardware store for enough material to hold my brains in.

i did try that method.. but still couldnt figure it out... i just gave to my friend.. perhaps he can solve it.. thanks for the tip anyways!!

This solution was by my clever wife, Annie! At one stage (because She didn't hear me right, she had 2 classmates with half a picture each... )

To work it out, my wife choose Debby as our Sarah

60 Photos average 10 per classmate

Sally = 2 x Phillipa = 8 x Katie = Sally
Phillipa = 4 x Katy
Mary = Phillipa and Katy
Helen = 2 x Mary
Debby(Sarah) = 4
Rest = 56

M = P + K
M = 4K + K = 5K
H = 10K
M = 5K
P = 4K
S = 8K
H = 10K

S + P + K + M + H = 56
8K + 4K + K + 5K + 10K = 56
28K = 56

K = 2

Phillipa = 8
Katy = 2
Mary = 10
Helen = 20
(Debby)Sarah = 4

Therefore, Sally has 16 Photos.....

this problem has made me think twice abt writing a competetive math based test coming november..!! i have enrolled for it... and gosh! i suck at math!! Sad

Annie says "Thx!" for your kind words! And certainly people said I married her for her money..... dummies! I married a walking talking encyclopedia! Now and then she is stumped, but that's only because so is the rest of the world!
