    Here is the criteria I use to identify potential moderators.

    Has a history of regularly logging in 1 or more times a day.
    Plays well with others showing no temper, ego, or agenda.
    Doesn't just post content but actually interacts with the members.
    Doesn't just make comments on other's content without contributing any new content themselves.
    Is old enough to know that he/she doesn't know everything.
    Has a greater than average popularity with the members.
    The candidate is acceptable to the current staff members.​

    Bonus points:
    Lives in a time zone not currently covered.
    Is female (forum is 90% male)
    Doesn't say "no" when asked to be a mod.​

    i have never been moderator here, obviously, but i was owner/administrator of my own forums and moderator at various forums over the years. i agree that it is more than many think. you cannot just come in and leisurely scroll through forums like regular members. there is a lot of checking to make sure content doesnt violate rules (probably moreso at a site with this particular theme), manage petty squabbles, and always be "on duty" even when if all you want to do is relax and post. but the worst part, to me, was how people would just expect special previleges because i was friendly in various posts. i mean, there is a big difference between being easy going and friendly in threads and having to do moderating. it is quite calming to be able to come and go as i please and only open threads that interest me :)
