As a general question, how do you know when you have PTSD?

It's different for everyone. But for most, it has to do with a general sense of being overly cautious, jumpy, irritable, nightmares, and thinking the world is out to get you. Only a trained psychologist can diagnose you. Don't self diagnose, as that can only make things worse.

Just for reference, I was diagnosed with mild PTSD after my first tour of Iraq, back in the aughts. I was easily angered, where before I was very laid back and easy going. I also jumped at the slightest things. The 4th of July was unbearable for me. I didn't suffer from thinking the world was out to get me, but my head was always on a swivel. I have friends that had it much worse than me. One friend of mine survived a roadside bomb, and after getting home, he had his license taken away for reckless driving. He has it back now, but PTSD can be hard to live with. With proper help (that I received through the VA), it can be managed.

    Hope this helps.
