Buffyfan, when I was working it was always two Thanksgivings a year for me.

Ours in October, then I always booked the day off for yours - parades, football, cheerleaders and marching bands ...

You folks do it up good !

    :)

But didnt you all change it, in the end, so you did not have to drive on ice or something like that?

Well you got me thinking, because I always thought that ours was earlier because of the temperature difference.

So I looked it up and found a good article :

    http://www.thelaboroflove.com/articles/why-is-thanksgiving-celebrated-on-a-different-date-in-canada

And essentially it is because we had to do the harvesting earlier - and as a bonus I learned a few interesting facts that I hadn't known before.

Now, if I can get my picks right for the November 23 NFL games, it will have been a good Thanksgiving all round.

    :)

No, we didn't change it at all. It has nothing to do with your American holiday, it just has the same name.

" The first Canadian Thanksgiving goes back even further than the United States.

Back in 1578 an English explorer named Martin Frobisher was trying to find a northern route to the Orient.
He was not successful in his quest, but he did end up establishing a settlement somewhere along what is Newfoundland today.

Despite not making it to the Orient, Frobisher was thankful the journey had been safe, and he decided to have a Day of Thanks.

This resulted in the first Thanksgiving. "

Niiname-sai - Japanese Labor Thanksgiving. Celebrated on November 23 of each year. First established in 680 AD. An earlier form called Nihon Shoki was celebrated as early as 600 BC.
