When we think about computers there are some expressions that are so familiar that we use them without thinking (too much) about what is behind them.

    Here at IB:
    avatar = maximum 50 KB = 51,200 bytes
    picture/movie = maximum 800 KB = 819,200 bytes

    Bit

this represents the value 0 (off) or 1 (on)

    Nibble

    1 Nibble = 4 bits

    Byte

    1 Byte = 8 bits

And now we go to the bigger values

    Kilobyte (KB)

    1 KB = 1,024 bytes

    Megabyte (MB)

    1 MB = 1,024 KB
    1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes

    Gigabyte (GB)

    1 GB = 1,024 MB
    1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

    Terabyte (TB)

    1 TB = 1,024 GB
    1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

    Petabyte (PB)

    1 PB = 1,024 TB
    1 PB = 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes

    Exabyte (EB)

    1 EB = 1,024 PB
    1 EB = 1,152,921,504,606,846,976 bytes

    Zettabyte (ZB)

    1 ZB = 1,024 EB
    1 ZB = 1,180,591,620,717,411,303, 424 bytes

    Yottabyte (YB)

    1 YB = 1,024 ZB
    1 YB = 1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 bytes

    Anything bigger?
As of 2015, there are no approved standard sizes for anything bigger than a Yottabyte. However, the two standards that have been proposed are the Hellabyte or Brontobyte.

    Using 25 GB Blu-ray discs

    1 TB = 40 discs
    1 PB = 41,943 discs
    1 EB = 42,949,672 discs
    1 ZB = 43,980,465,111 discs
    1 YB = 45,035,996,273,704 discs

Back in 1985, I saw a 1 terabyte disc storage system. It was 6 feet tall 10 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Today I can go to Walmart buy a terabyte drive and walk out with it in my pocket.

Computer space is generally measured in terabytes these days, so I guess petabytes will be the next step up for computer memory.

I learned to program computers using punch cards and paper tape. I am proficient in using a keypunch machine. I also took a class on using this. I still have one in a desk drawer.

It's not a lost art. I have one too, but mine's circular.
I also can read verniers. Some of us young folk can exist without "an app for that".

Not all of us. Just the millennials. Most don't know how to write a letter by hand using a pencil or pen.
